Cali Swag Talk Inspiration Behind M-Bone Tribute 'How To Do That'

'We wanted to do a song that's not sad, because M-Bone, he wasn't a sad person,' CSD's Yung tells MTV News.By Rob Markman, with reporting by Vanessa Whitewolf

Mante "M-Bone" Talbert was the life of the party, and for their tribute song to their fallen bandmate, Cali Swag District wanted to reflect that. Last week CSD released "How to Do That," a single dedicated to M-Bone, who was tragically gunned down in Inglewood, California, on May 15.

"We wanted to do a song that's not sad, because M-Bone, he wasn't a sad person," Cali Swag's Yung told MTV News. "He was always hyper, had a lot of energy, loud. We want people to dance, we don't want people to sit down and cry when they think about M-Bone. We want people to smile and dance."
The track, which was produced by Poly Rob, has popping 808s and hand-clapping snares. Over the dance track, JayAre, Yung and C-Smoove all eulogize Bone in their own unique ways. But for Smoove, it wasn't easy, as he is still getting used to being in the studio without Talbert. "They did their verses and then I came later, but it was just like, it's weird being at the studio now. I feel like, 'Ehhh,' " he said. "I go up there, I still check in and stuff, I still record, but it's just different. I stay home most of the time, and then if I need to do a song, I'll go do a song, then I'll probably leave. I don't know, at the moment, I still gotta sit back and take it all in, before I can go back and just chill up there all the time."
Smoove took his time writing his portion of the song, making sure that his lyrics felt right. "I took forever to write my verse. I took a long time to write 16 bars. I wanted it to be and feel like I meant what I was saying," he said. "I had to make the lyrics fit the beat and make people still want to move to it and not bring 'em down by what I was saying."
On Friday, Talbert's family, friends and fans laid him to rest. His funeral service and burial were open to the public. Inglewood police are still investigating his murder and are asking anyone with information to come forward and call its homicide division at (310) 412-5246 or its 24-hour anonymous hotline at (888) 41-CRIME (888-412-7463).

Cloud-based computing models make a great deal of sense for plenty of businesses -- especially those small-to-medium-size ones that don't want to sink a fortune into building and maintaining an IT infrastructure. Justin Bieber, Chris Brown 'Next 2 You' Video Will Be 'Big,' Director Says

Colin Tilley also talks about shooting 'Look at Me Now' from F.A.M.E.By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf

On Tuesday, fans immediately became excited by the news that Justin Bieber and Chris Brown have plans to shoot a video for Brown's F.A.M.E. track "Next 2 You." Luckily, that same day, MTV News had the pleasure of speaking with the video's director, Colin Tilley, who shared a bit about the clip.
"Tomorrow, I'm shooting New Boyz and Chris Brown ... then Justin Bieber and Chris Brown, together," he teased. "I can't tell you anything about that yet, but it's going to happen. It's gonna be big. It's gonna be big. I can't say anything else."

Tilley had more to say about working with Brown on his eye-popping video for "Look at Me Now." "I remember when we first got the song and Chris sent it to us: It was the first time I had heard the song, and it was so crazy to me," Tilley recalled. "Before we do every video, I always talk to Chris to kind of feel where he's going with the song and just where his motivation was with the song, and he actually sent me this one YouTube link ... It was this little '80s clip of these hip-hop dancers dancing.
"I would play it to the actual song, and at one point of the song, there were all these dancers dancing on these street elements like benches and tables and stuff like that," he continued. "From there, it just started to evolve from street elements and this whole underground vibe to just getting crazier and crazier. I wanted to make sure it was really exciting."
Visually, the video never stops, thanks to a saturated color palette, cameos from Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes (who are featured on the track), funky clothes and funkier dancing.
"Chris is just always down to make something different, so that was really it ... the mask came about from Diplo and the cage, and it all started to evolve to this awesome video," Tilley added.

T.I. Might Have Mixed Emotions About Album Release, DJ Drama Says

Despite #4 debut, Drama says Tip probably regrets not being able to promote No Mercy.By Jayson Rodriguez

T.I. and DJ Drama

T.I. is sitting behind bars, but if the rapper can take any solace from his situation, it's that his latest effort No Mercy had a strong debut, landing at #4 on next week's Billboard 200.
But T.I. associate DJ Drama, thinks the rapper probably has mixed feelings about the news that his album pushed nearly 160,000 units last week.

"Tip is the type of guy that, I'm sure, no matter how high it debuted, he might feel disappointed, because he's not here, [and he might] feel like he could have done better," Drama told MTV News. "If it does whatever numbers it does, with him being here, it might have done double that. I think this [release] is the toughest one for him. I been a part of his career for the last 10 years, and I seen him in and out of legal problems. But I think this one is a little bit different. Hopefully, this one is the most life-changing one for him. I listened to the album, and I watched it being made, and it's some quality work. You know, at the end of the day, it's about the music. And he still comes with that music.
"But I don't think he's sitting there celebrating and thinking, 'Oh, we did a good number,' or, 'We debuted high,' " Drama added. "He's probably thinking to himself, 'Damn, I could have done a lot better if I was in a better position by being home to work.' "
Currently, Tip is serving an 11-month sentence for violation his probation, stemming from his arrest in Los Angeles in September.
The rapper and his wife, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, were pulled over for a traffic violation and police discovered drugs in the vehicle. T.I. was let go without being charged in the incident and traveled back to Atlanta, where he later faced the same judge that sentenced him to one year and one day in prison on weapons charges.

Britney Spears Drops Official 'Till The World Ends' Remix

New track with Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha follows leaked version, plus Brit tweets single's cover art.By Jocelyn Vena

The "Till the World Ends" Femme Fatale remix

Photo: Jive

Just days after it was leaked on Friday, Britney Spears and her femme fatales, Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha, dropped their official remix of "Till the World Ends."
The new version of the song was produced by Dr. Luke and Dream Machine. Brit half-whispers " 'Till the World Ends' remix" before the beat kicks in and Nicki hits her verse hard. She spits fierce lines like, "Sniff, sniff, cries/ I done slayed your whole entire f---ing life."

Then Britney's sex-kitten vocals kick in for the song's first verse. "That's Britney, bitch! I'm Nicki Minaj and that's Ke$ha," the Queens MC declares before K sings the chorus. The beat is harder, the loops are sassier and the song is grimier than the original version, which was the second single from Femme Fatale. The newly added dubstep portion takes the one from "Hold It Against Me" to a new level by adding in bass-heavy synths.
Ke$ha, of course, wrote the track for Britney, and the ladies certainly don't seem to mind sharing the spotlight with each other. The official track isn't much different than the version that leaked over the weekend, though Spears did have something brand-new to share with her fans just as the song dropped on iTunes and streamed on her website.
Spears tweeted the artwork for the single, which features the original press photo of Spears along with separate photos of Nicki on the left and Ke$ha on the right. Spears wrote, "@NickiMinaj @Keshasuxx Too much fierceness for one cover! Thanks for lending your voices girls... #TTWEREMIX — Brit"
Spears and Minaj have been hanging out a lot in the lead-up to their summer tour. They hung out at the Factory nightclub on Friday night after Minaj's show in Los Angeles. Spears later wrote, "Early rehearsal after a late night with my girl @NickiMinaj. Can't WAIT to get out on the road with you."

Ke$ha Is Channeling 'Sexiness' Of '70s Rock For New Album

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Ke$ha

Photo: MTV News

Ke$ha's already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to guzzling blood out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most theatrical era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s.
Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual Wango Tango concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout Animal album (and, we suppose, Cannibal too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much everything else.

"The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it."
So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc.
"I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it."
What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!

'Kung Fu Panda 2': The Reviews Are In!

One reviewer calls sequel 'both meditative and immensely entertaining.'By Eric Ditzian

"Kung Fu Panda 2"

Photo: Paramount Pictures

Over at MTV Movies Blog, we've already laid out the five reasons you need to see "Kung Fu Panda 2." From Jack Black's manically hilarious turn as Po to some wickedly creative fight scenes, this sequel is a ton of fun.
But hey, don't just take our word for it. Reviewers are riding high on this animal adventure, a follow-up to DreamWorks' 2008 animated hit, celebrating the lush visuals and the top-notch voice performance Black delivers. Dissenters are few and far between, and their criticisms read more like nitpicking and fail to acknowledge that kids will undoubtedly get a kick out of this flick.

The Story
"Deepening the surprising maturity of its predecessor, the movie successfully takes story beats from classic kung fu stories and dials back on the humor without letting things get too dark and dramatic, creating a work that is both meditative and immensely entertaining. Picking up where the first film left off, Po (Jack Black) has eased into his position as the Dragon Warrior, when the world of kung fu is threatened by the return of Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), a villain who has built a weapon of mass destruction. What Po doesn't know, however, is that Lord Shen holds the key to his history and the knowledge of who he really is. Working with the kung fu masters known as the Furious Five (Angelina Jolie, David Cross, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen and Jackie Chan), Po is not only on a mission to save China, but on a journey of self-discovery." — Eric Eisenberg, Cinema Blend
The Performances
"Aside from crisp visuals and no-fat way with martial arts movie traditions, the biggest achievement of the 'Kung Fu Panda' movies is how they distill their star's very Jack Black-ness down to its most bearable form. Always the wildest guy in the room, Black has turned into a living 'Gulliver's Travels.' Yet here, as in the first 'KFP,' he gives a charmingly vulnerable but sly vocal performance, with plenty of sass and a decent side order of soul." — Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News
The Visuals
"Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson's background in design and animation seems to have informed the best parts of 'Kung Fu Panda 2' — its splendid palette of color and detail, rich but crisp and balanced (Guillermo del Toro served as a creative consultant, and one of Po's murky, indelible nightmares bears his distinctive mark); and that palette's harmony with both the engaged use of 3-D and the witty and well-defined battle sequences." — Michelle Orange, Movieline
The Dissenters
"This one plays with some unusually dark and upsetting material. Its escalation of evil messes up the high-spirited sweetness that was the most winning feature of the first movie. Po's clumsy, goofy eagerness no longer seems quite as amusing now that he is a psychologically damaged warrior. And his action-team entourage, drawn from various species of animal and movie star — praying mantis, tiger, monkey, etc; Seth Rogen, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, etc. — do more to crowd the picture than to enliven it." — A.O. Scott, The New York Times
The Final Word
"There is a price to be paid for the visual razzle-dazzle — wonderful complexity against a simple story that could have benefited from some bulking up (layered, not longer). Still with Black shelving his usual snark for Po's self-deprecating charm, Jolie making Tigress terrifyingly overqualified for everything as only she can do, Rogen's Mantis showing the actor's growing facility for voicing animation and [Dustin] Hoffman, as ever, the guru everyone wants, they've brought this warrior's tale to kicking, spinning, bone-crunching, feather-flying life." — Betsey Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
Check out everything we've got on "Kung Fu Panda 2."

'American Idol' Season 10's Other Winners And Losers

Simon Cowell and Jimmy Iovine didn't fare as well as Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Fox network, experts say.By Gil Kaufman

"American Idol" Final 11

Photo: FOX

Though it has ruled the TV for much of the past decade, there were no guarantees that "American Idol" would lord the airwaves when season 10 kicked off in January. But with a champion about to be crowned in the battle of the country teens between Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, we thought we'd convene a panel of experts to sift through this year's other winners and losers.

The Winners
Fox Network: The most obvious winner, according to The Hollywood Reporter's music editor Shirley Halperin is the Fox network itself. Coming into a season of vast uncertainty following the departure of three-quarters of the judging panel, including anchor Simon Cowell, not to mention a ratings dip, the network had every reason to be concerned.
"The first big winner would have to be Fox, because everyone predicted complete doom for 'American Idol' season 10," Halperin said. "Not only are the [ratings] numbers stable, they're just as strong as last season and I have a feeling the finale will top last season."
Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez: Other winners, according to Richard Rushfield, author of "American Idol: The Untold Story," are new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. Surely the two music veterans have achieved exactly what they wanted with their unlikely new roles. For Tyler, the reinvention as America's wacky, loving uncle after four decades in the spotlight fronting hard-partying Aerosmith has not only helped his band move tons of back-catalog songs and albums, but also provided the perfect launching pad for his just-released memoir and debut solo single.
As for Lopez, whose reputation as an imperious diva whose music and movie careers had hit the skids, she has emerged as a less wacky, more loveable Paula Abdul type, whose exposure as a sensitive, caring career striver has helped garner her a smash hit single with "On the Floor" and decent returns on her new album, Love?.
"A year ago they were relatively irrelevant. Not a lot of people were talking or thinking about them," Entertainment Weekly Assistant Managing Editor Dalton Ross said about Lopez and Tyler. "And now both of them are in the spotlight, Steven's got a hit book, Jennifer's got a hit song and they're right back in the public consciousness."
Other winners:
James Durbin: Rushfield called him a dark horse, a "weird, wacky" character who managed to go far on the show and make a lot of fans, with Ross predicting that the fourth-place finisher could end up on Broadway in a show like "Rock of Ages" or with some other career that's better than his bar band past.
Country music: Though there are plenty of other shows on networks like CMT that crown new 10-gallon royalty, Ross said you should "never underestimate the country voting bloc," who proved their power this year by putting both McCreery and Alaina in the finale.
Losers
Simon Cowell: With "Idol" skating along just fine without him, seemingly on the cusp of crowning a champ who could become the first breakout star since ... well, the last country "Idol," Carrie Underwood, Ross suspected that Cowell is not too chipper these days. As he attempts to build up excitement for his fall "X Factor" launch, Cowell has seen NBC's "The Voice" become the new singing-show darling, and the critical and popular reception of his judging panel — consisting of former "Idol" foil Paula Abdul, little-known British singer Cheryl Cole and former music exec Antonio "L.A." Reid — has been tame at best, if not indifferent. "Everyone was really anticipating 'X Factor' coming, now 'Idol' has kept that audience ... and you look at 'The Voice,' ... it makes people a bit less excited for 'X Factor,' " Ross said.
The viewers: Halperin suggested that the American viewing public may be losing out, even if it's not the fault of "Idol" directly. "There's just too many singing shows coming at them," she said. "They have to divide their time between a lot of other entertaining programs."
Divas: "Idol" pushed a lot of big-voiced divas at viewers this year, but they failed to make an impact and fizzled out from early rounders Julie Zorrilla and Kendra Chantelle to top 13ers Pia Toscano, Haley Reinhart and Ashthon Jones.
Jimmy Iovine: Though you can argue that the savvy Iovine only helped his bottom line by ceaselessly promoting the Beats by Dre brand of headphones and microphones with heavy-handed product placement, as well as getting ample screen time for some of his artists (Lady Gaga, will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and Sheryl Crow), Halperin wondered if maybe he was too invested in being a part of the "Idol" mix.
"It has yet to be determined what he will get out of this situation," Halperin said. "What I'm seeing is someone who has a record company to run and is spending half of his week working on contestants whose futures are unknown." In other words, the work for Iovine really begins when the show ends and he has to turn an as-yet-undetermined amount of his new protégés into stars.
A few other potential losers:
Randy Jackson: The only remaining original "Idol" adjudicator was not only overshadowed by his new cohorts, but his signature catchphrases sounded even more hackneyed and irrelevant next to Tyler's cryptic quips and Lopez's sometimes useful, insightful career advice.
Longtime "Idol" fans: If you aren't a fan of country music, you're out of luck this year thanks to Wednesday night's showdown between the first country-strong top two in show history. With pop and R&B mostly shunted to the side in the top five in favor of James Durbin's warmed-over metal and Haley Reinhart's pop blues, fans of straight-ahead ear candy were left on the sidelines of this year's competition.

Justin Bieber, Eminem Dominate Billboard Music Awards

Justin Bieber tied with Eminem as the top winner at Sunday night's Billboard Music Awards with six trophies. But it was his embrace of reported sweetie Selena Gomez that set the Internet on fire after a night that saw splashy performances from Rihanna, an upside-down Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Mary J. Blige with Lil Wayne, Taio Cruz, the Black Eyed Peas and Pitbull.

Bieber's awards included trophies for Top New Artist, Top Social Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Digital Media Artist, Top Pop Album and Top Streaming Song at his first-ever trip to the show. Meanwhile, veteran Eminem (who was not in Las Vegas for the show) nabbed Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Song and Top Rap Album for his smash comeback, Recovery.
Six artists were just behind with three wins each, including Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Usher, Mumford & Sons and Cruz. Though Bieber and Gomez have kept their relationship under wraps for months, the "Baby" singer kissed and hugged Gomez before taking the stage to accept an award.
The show featured a number of performances, two of which included surprise appearances from a lip-synching Britney Spears. The pop diva literally popped up out of the floor to join Rihanna for "S&M," writhing on a stripper pole while brandishing a pair of diamond handcuffs. The two finished things off with a pillow fight and a kiss. She also topped off a performance of Minaj's "Super Bass" with a bit of her own "Till the World Ends."
Weezy teamed up with Blige for the remix of "Someone to Love Me (Naked)." Green wore a sparkly outer-space outfit while playing piano and singing a medley of his hits ("Crazy," "Bright Lights Bigger City" and "Forget You"); he levitated over the stage and pounded the keys of his silver piano while hanging upside down at one point.
But perhaps the biggest moment of the night was when Beyoncé was presented with the prestigious Billboard Millennium Award, which was preceded by a video honoring her with testimonials from First Lady Michelle Obama, Bono, Lady Gaga, Bey's parents and sister Solange, Stevie Wonder, The-Dream and Barbra Streisand.
She accepted the award after an eye-popping performance of her new single, "Run the World (Girls)," which was highlighted by a breathtaking digital background featuring a shifting array of effects that produced a legion of virtual backup dancers and CGI-like movie effects.
Out of breath from her performance, Beyoncé thanked her mother and father for teaching her about hard work, as well as former Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, past DC members and, in a break with their usual low-key nature, husband Jay-Z.
"I'd also like to thank my best friend, and I don't want to put you on the spot because I know they're probably putting a camera in your face right now, but I love me some Jay-Z," she said with a smile.
A number of artists also took home two awards apiece, including Katy Perry, Shakira and Train.

T.I.'s No Mercy Debuts At #4 On Billboard

Susan Boyle holds tight to #1 on next week's albums chart.By Gil Kaufman

T.I.'s <i>No Mercy</i>

Photo: Grand Hustle Records

Susan Boyle has officially earned the honorary title of Christmas Queen. For the second year in a row, the "Britain's Got Talent" runner-up is taking on all comers with a chart-topping holiday release that has a stranglehold on the top spot of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Her second release, The Gift, will once again take the pole position next week with sales of 243,000, giving her a five-week total north of 1.3 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
The only new release to crack the top five is T.I.'s No Mercy, which comes in at #4. The album sold 159,000 just weeks after the King of the South reported to prison for an 11-month sentence tied to a probation violation from his 2007 federal weapons case. Also breaking into the top 10 is the "Tron Legacy" soundtrack from helmet-rocking techno duo Daft Punk, which moved 71,000 copies in its chart debut.
The top 10 is otherwise just a shuffle of the usual suspects. Taylor Swift keeps her grip on the #2 spot with Speak Now, which sold 201,000 copies, pushing her past the 2.3 million mark in less than two months. Swift is followed by the "Glee" Christmas album (#3, 193,000), grade school reality-show opera singer Jackie Evancho's O Holy Night EP (#5, 149,000), Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday (#6, 82,000), Josh Groban's Illuminations (#7, 75,000), another "Glee" collection, Vol. 4 (#8, 74,000), and Rihanna's Loud (#9, 71,000).
After just two weeks in the top 10, Kanye West's well-reviewed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy falls to #14 as sales shrank by 39 percent to 67,000. The Black Eyed Peas had an even harsher comedown for The Beginning, which drops 10 spots in week two to #16 (62,000, sales down 48 percent).
Hard rockers Hinder enter the fray at #37 with All American Nightmare (35,000) while deadmau5 squeaks in at #47 with his album 4x4=12 (27,0000) and British soul siren Duffy hits #72 with her second album, Endlessly (18,000). My Chemical Romance are marching the wrong way on the chart with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, which drops 27 spots to #87 in its third week, selling just 15,000 copies.
That's gangbusters compared to season nine "American Idol" winner Lee DeWyze, who continues to struggle to get traction for his debut, Live It Up. The LP slides another 10 spots to #133 on sales of 9,000, giving him a one-month total just shy of 72,000.
The "Glee" Christmas album is tops on the iTunes albums chart, besting T.I., who settles in at #2, followed by Kanye, "Tron," deadmua5, Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More, Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Hinder, Rihanna and the "Burlesque" soundtrack.
The singles chart once again belongs to Katy Perry and her smash "Firework," with Mars right behind with "Grenade." They're followed by the Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)," Rihanna and Drake's "What's My Name," Pink's "Raise Your Glass," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," T.I.'s hookup with Eminem, "That's All She Wrote," Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow," Trey Songz's "Bottoms Up" and Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight."
Next week should present the first challenge to Boyle's domination with the arrival of late pop icon Michael Jackson's first posthumous studio album, Michael, as well as new discs from R. Kelly, Diddy-Dirty Money, Ciara and the major-label debut of "Idol" runner-up Crystal Bowersox.

Beyonce Dons Her Diva Crown On 'American Idol' Finale

'Idol' finalists joined the pop diva for an all-girl medley of B smash hits.By Adam Graham

Who run the world? Girls!
The ladies of "American Idol" proved it during Wednesday's (May 25) season-closer when they performed a medley of Beyoncé hits, and were joined at the finish by Beyoncé herself.

The girls — Pia Toscano, Karen Rodriguez, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Thia Megia and Haley Reinhart — hit the stage in various red-and-black ensembles and shared the stage during B's #1 smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Adedapo opened the song and threw some sass on it before passing the mic to Jones, the season's 13th-place finisher, who was eliminated during the first week of semifinals competition. The girls took their turns with the vocals and aped the familiar moves from the single's iconic video, which one rapper sort-of semi-famously referred to once as one of the greatest music videos of all time.
Megia and the frequently bilingual Rodriguez took center stage and duetted on "Irreplaceable," another #1 hit for Beyoncé, while the rest of the group chimed in on the "you must not know 'bout me" chorus. That transitioned into "Get Me Bodied," with each singer working the stage with maximum 'tude. "If I Were a Boy" was next, with the contestants sitting down on the side of the stage and Reinhart tackling the chorus with her big, growly vocals. Jones was also allowed to flex her muscles on the song, and Toscano soon took center stage as the song segued into "Déjà Vu." Toscano, frequently criticized during her "Idol" run for only attempting big, old-fashioned ballads, came off well during the uptempo song.
But then the Queen B herself hit the riser at the top of the stairs and showed the ladies a thing or two about being a diva. The big horns from "Crazy in Love," her first solo hit, signaled her arrival, and she hit the stage with an abundance of style and authority. She danced in a long line with the "Idol" ladies (and a few backup dancers to boot) and ran through a verse of the song, strutting across the stage and whipping her hair like a true star. The performance ended with the "Idol" gals wrapping their arms around Beyoncé in a big group hug, and without even performing her new single, Beyoncé showed that girls run the world, or at least the "Idol" stage.
Later in the show, Beyoncé returned to debut her new song, "One Plus One." She introduced the dramatic piano-led ballad as her "favorite" song, and sang it on a sparse, smoke-filled stage, dropping to her knees at one point and shaking hands with the fans gathered in front of her.
What did you think of the Beyoncé medley? Let us know in the comments!

Wiz Khalifa Explains Why Rolling Papers Has Few Collabos

'I figured with my first album I could accomplish establishing my own identity,' Wiz tells MTV News.By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts

Wiz Khalifa

Photo: MTV News

Wiz Khalifa is riding high. The Pittsburgh rapper's debut, Rolling Papers, sold 197,000 copies in its first week of release, enough to land the album at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
For Wiz, the success is made sweeter because although the album's biggest hit so far is the Stargate-produced "Black and Yellow," nearly half of the production on the record was provided by longtime Khalifa producers and collaborators I.D. Labs.

"Other than making sure that my people that I came up with get filthy rich, I wanted to keep the sound consistent," Wiz told MTV News about using his in-house team of beatmakers. "I wanted to really stick with what I know and build on that, other than getting in the position and completely switching. Take it to the next level was more what I had in mind."
Another familiar industry name made the album in spite of the fact that he, too, wasn't in Wiz's immediate circle.
"We decided to add Too Short on 'On My Level' when we were deciding to do the video," Wiz said of the first song he recorded for the album. "I wanted to do something bigger than just doing a video with me 'cause people were used to that at that time. So I was like, 'Let's just use our powers and holla at Too Short.'
"I've always been a big fan, ya know," Wiz explained. "So when we did it, he knocked it straight out, which was a big deal for me. And then he was with getting in the video; that was really big for me too."
The only other featured rappers on Rolling Papers are Taylor Gang member Chevy Woods on "Star of the Show" and New Orleans MC Curren$y on "Rooftops." Despite major co-signs from star MCs like Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg, Wiz made a conscious decision to keep the album's guest list to a minimum.
"I trimmed it down and I just kept it regular because I wanted to save that suspense of me working with these other artists and making these huge records," Wiz said. "I wanted to save that. I figured with my first album I could accomplish establishing my own identity and that's what I really wanted to do with this music and when that happens, I can do all that other stuff."

'American Idol' Preview: Scotty McCreery Vs. Lauren Alaina

Which country kid will come out on top?By Eric Ditzian

Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina

Photo: FOX

Is Scotty McCreery unstoppable? That's the question heading into Tuesday's (May 24) "American Idol" performance finale.
That we're even facing the topic of his potential imperviousness to the whims of the voting public marks quite a turnaround for the 17-year-old country crooner. Just a few months ago during Hollywood Week, Scotty could be spotted desperately searching for a group that would take him and facing rude rejections from nearly every corner of the Pasadena Civic Center. While his fellow "Idol" contestants didn't seem to take kindly to Scotty's old-school country baritone, everything changed once the voting portion of the show kicked in.
Ever since, the kid has been untouchable. He stands now as a remarkable "Idol" specimen, one who arrived on the reality-show scene fully formed. In contrast to the artistic growth expected of most every contestant, Scotty has stayed solidly within his comfort zone, busting out performances of remarkable maturity, tunes that would find an eager home on country radio stations across the nation
. He hasn't had to grow, because what he does, he does with an easy, breezy talent that defies his years.
Yet "Idol," historically, has been filled with shocking finales. Observers, even veteran ones, make guaranteed predictions at their own peril. Last year, while neither Lee DeWyze nor Crystal Bowersox ever landed in the bottom on elimination nights, opinions coalesced around the idea that the dreadlocked soul sister deserved to best the rather milquetoast soft rocker. DeWyze came out the winner. In 2009, no one could dispute Adam Lambert was one of the most original and inspiring contestants ever to take the "Idol" stage, and still, he lost to Kris Allen. And who can forget the mind-boggling 2006 finale, when Chris Daughtry had already been booted and Taylor Hicks rode his soul train to victory over Katharine McPhee?
The past, however, is in the past. In Lauren Alaina, we have a very formidable opponent. The 16-year-old has been a producer and judge favorite from the beginning, featured often in the audition rounds and usually fawned over during the live shows by Randy Jackson and his cohorts. She's also, no doubt, amassed a fervent fanbase, one that seems to have been scared into action when she landed in the bottom three earlier this month and which was able to siphon off enough of James Durbin's voters to knock off Haley Reinhart last week. Lauren's similarity to Carrie Underwood, at least on the surface and in the judges' often-voiced opinions, should also not be discounted. Though a woman hasn't won "Idol" since Jordin Sparks' triumph in 2007, all these factors combine to make Lauren a potent force headed into Tuesday's show.
While spoilers are popping up all over the Web, we'll stick to our usual policy and decline to point out the specific songs Lauren and Scotty are expected to perform. Here's what we can say: Each singer will deliver three tunes — a personal favorite from the season, a single selected by producers and a track picked for Lauren by Carrie Underwood and picked for Scotty by George Strait.
The producer's singles have traditionally been original tunes that become the singer's coronation songs, but those tracks aren't typically artistic boons; they're usually heavy on the schmaltz and light on opportunities to show off what each singer does best. This year, like last year, however, the producer's single will be covers; thus, they'll give us a sneak peek at what Lauren and Scotty will be like as pros. The thing is, we already have a pretty good clue as to what they'll be like. Expect these songs to be unsurprising picks; how and if they rework them, and how successfully the performances turn out, will be the key. Then there's the personal fave. Whatever Lauren and Scotty pick, the songs should have no trouble bringing the judges to their feet and the voters to their phones, ready to text in vote after vote once Ryan Seacrest gives the signal. Underwood's and Strait's picks, similarly, will play to each singer's country strengths.
The takeaway from all this is that there really shouldn't be too many surprises on Tuesday. We know Scotty will project a preternatural calm, shimmying across the stage like he's been doing it for decades. Lauren will battle her nerves, and if she settles into two midtempo tunes, she'll still be in good shape. The true sweaty-palmed action won't come until Wednesday's elimination show. If you ask us, though, Scotty will remain unstoppable.
Who will win it all? Make your predictions in the comments below!

Justin Bieber, Chris Brown Set To Shoot 'Next 2 You' Video

Scooter Braun, Biebs' manager, teases 'crazy' clip from F.A.M.E.By Jocelyn Vena

Chris Brown recently took the stage with Justin Bieber during the Biebs' tour stop in Australia, where they performed "Up," and now the two will begin work on a video for Brown's F.A.M.E. track "Next 2 You."
Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, confirmed the video plans on Twitter. "NP- #Next2You w/ @justinbieber and @chrisbrown - video treatment is crazy ... yeah it's coming!!" he wrote.
With little known about what these two have in store for fans, MTV News spoke to Brown in March about working with the teen star on the track. "Being able to collab with [Bieber] was great," Brown said. "He's a young, energetic cat, so being able to work with him, with the fanbase he has, was incredible. I know a lot of little girls are going to love this record.
"I wouldn't say [he's] my protégé. He's doing his thing at a young age, and I was doing mine at a young age, so being able to see him come up is dope."
The midtempo ballad is about the power of love and making the pledge to spend your life with that special someone. The chorus says, "One day when the sky is fallin'/ I'll be standing right next to you, right next to you/ Nothing will ever come between us/ 'Cause I'll be standing right next to you, right next to you."
While it's a feel-good track, Brown joked that when recording the song, he missed his chance to hit the studio with Bieber. "I actually stood him up on accident," Brown recalled. "He was kind of mad ... I was all the way on the other side of town handling some business, 'girl business,' and I was rushing back, and by that time, he's like, 'Man, I'm leaving, bro. I did it — just check it out.' And I looked at it and listened to it and I was like, 'Man, this is crazy.' ... He's a great kid."

Taylor Swift's 'Mean' Video Aims To Empower Fans

Singer plays up anti-bullying message in her video.By Jocelyn Vena

Cover art for Taylor Swift's "Mean"

Photo: Big Machine Records

Taylor Swift's video for "Mean" (from last year's Speak Now) is the latest entry in an avalanche of empowering clips, which we've seen from artists like Katy Perry ("Firework") and Pink ("Raise Your Glass").
Swift's clip, directed by Declan Whitebloom, was shot over two days in Los Angeles, with the Orpheum Theatre serving as its backdrop. It opens with Swift and her band in the theater. She plays the banjo, and they're all dressed in vintage-inspired clothes (as seen during her ACM performance). The stage is set up like a front yard of a farmhouse.

The video cuts to a boy reading a fashion magazine in a locker room being bullied by the football team. The video is back on that stage, where Swift is throwing a jubilant honky tonk.
Now, Swift is dressed in a little white '20s-style dress and is being tied to the tracks by an old-timey villain. (This image was also used for the single art.) He and his friends laugh as she sits there helpless. But Swift and the others are hardly the only victims in the clip. Viewers are back in modern time, where a girl, wearing a fast-food uniform, is being made fun of by her peers.
Another girl is being teased in school and can't sit with "the cool girls" at lunch and is forced to eat in the school bathroom. All the while, Swift is plucking away at her banjo. Her words are empowering the young people affected by their bullies.
All that playing does eventually pay off for Swift. The stage is now transformed into a ritzy nightclub, with the singer all dazzled up in a sparkly flapper gown performing in the big leagues. What about the others? They've also found themselves as well. The boy reading the fashion magazine is now a famous fashion designer. The fast food worker saved up for college and is a big-time executive. The other girl? Well, she's in the audience watching Swift perform, cheering her on just liked Swift's song cheered her on.
What did you think of Taylor's new video? Let us know in the comments!

'Hunger Games' Casts Lenny Kravitz As Cinna

'When I saw Lenny's work in 'Precious,' I was just knocked out,' director Gary Ross says.By Kara Warner

Lenny Kravitz

Photo: Jo Hale/ Getty Images

The buzzworthy big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian best-seller "The Hunger Games" has added yet another highly anticipated cast member: Lenny Kravitz will play creative, kindhearted stylist Cinna.
Director Gary Ross said of the casting decision, "When I saw Lenny's work in 'Precious,' I was just knocked out. It was quiet and strong and understated and openhearted; all qualities which define this character. I'm really looking forward to this ride."
Cinna is the stylist for District 12 tributes Katniss and Peeta. Hunger Games stylists are responsible for presenting their tributes in complex costumes and ensembles that reflect characteristics of the tributes' native districts, as well as the personalities of the young men and women to which the stylist is assigned. Cinna is one of the few calming presences in Katniss' life, as well as one of the few people she can trust.
Naturally, Kravitz is best known for his music career — he won the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance Grammy four years in a row from 1999 to 2002, breaking the record for most wins in that category and most consecutive wins in one category — with tracks like "Are You Gonna Go My Way," "Fly Away," "American Woman," and "Again." Over the last few years, however, Kravitz has dipped his multitalented toe into the world of acting, his breakout role being that of compassionate and encouraging Nurse John in "Precious."
Kravitz joins a long list of high-profile stars, including Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinkett and Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane.

Justin Bieber, Eminem Dominate Billboard Music Awards

Teen superstar and rapper each won six trophies at Sunday night's show.By Gil Kaufman

T.I. Reprimanded After Overly Amorous Prison Visit With Wife Tiny

Rapper sent to restricted 'special housing unit' for violating prison rules, according to TMZ.By Gil Kaufman

Incarcerated rapper T.I., in the midst of an 11-month prison bid for probation violations, was reportedly reprimanded this weekend after getting a bit too amorous during a visit with wife Tameka "Tiny" Cottle.
According to TMZ, T.I. (born Clifford Harris) was caught by guards getting "frisky" with his wife during visiting hours at the Forrest City Federal Correctional Complex in Arkansas over the weekend. Citing wife Tiny as its source, the gossip site said the couple was in a room during an approved conjugal visit during regular visiting hours when things got a little too hands on.
The extracurricular activity is against prison guidelines, which allow inmates to hold hands, kiss and embrace at the beginning and end of their visit, but require the prisoner's hands to "remain in plain view of Visiting Room staff at all times."
Tiny reportedly told the site that her hubby was immediately reprimanded and sent to a "special housing unit," which allows him less freedom and has tighter security. She said she hasn't spoken to Tip since the incident, but hopes that she can visit him again soon.
A spokesperson for the rapper had no comment on the incident at press time.
T.I. turned himself over to authorities on November 1 to begin his second stint in the Arkansas prison in less than a year.
The low-security prison is the same facility where the King of the South served nine months last year after he secured a plea deal with Georgia prosecutors stemming from a 2007 gun case. The experimental deal required Tip to complete 1,500 hours of community service and endure home confinement in exchange for a lesser sentence. He was also required to complete a probation period afterward. The rapper was released in March after serving out the remainder of his time at a halfway house.
He was sent back to the facility after an October 2010 arrest in Los Angeles for drug possession after police searched the couple's vehicle following a traffic violation.

'X-Men' Star Jennifer Lawrence Was Intimidated By 'Gorgeous' Rebecca Romijn

Actress talks to MTV News about taking over Mystique role in 'First Class' prequel.By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and actress Rebecca Romijn pioneered the big-screen portrayal of Mystique, the blue-skinned, shape-shifting baddie, in three "X-Men" films. For 20-year-old Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who was tasked with taking on a young version of the mutant for the upcoming prequel, "X-Men: First Class," Romijn's performances might have proved helpful — if it weren't for one small thing.

"It would have made my job a lot easier if she wasn't the most gorgeous person in the world," Lawrence laughed in a recent MTV News interview. "I was like, 'Really?' "
"It was good because you can take physical traits, but it's an origin story so it's before she became who she is," she added.
Romijn's statuesque example wasn't the only thing that initially kept Lawrence, who won critical plaudits and Oscar and Golden Globe nods for her turn in "Winter's Bone" last year, from taking on the comic book adaptation. As she put, "It was a brainer."
But she gradually came around to the idea after going back and watching the first three "X-Men" films before her audition, diving into the script and hearing which other actors had been cast.
"It is huge, but the movies are fantastic and I watched them and became a huge fan," she explained. "After reading the script, I really loved the script and I loved the character and I was already a fan of the director, [Matthew Vaughn], and I was already a fan of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, so then it became a little bit more of a no-brainer."
Do you think Jennifer Lawrence will make a good Mystique? Tell us in the comments!

'Twilight' Star Kellan Lutz Relished 'Normal Guy' Role In New Movie

Playing a newlywed opposite Mandy Moore in 'Love Wedding Marriage' was 'quite nice,' he tells MTV News.By Kara Warner

Although Kellan Lutz is perhaps best known for his role as brawny vampire Emmett Cullen in the "Twilight" films, the 26-year-old has started to branch out a bit, with roles in the upcoming action-adventure film "Immortals" and the romantic comedy "Love Wedding Marriage," which co-stars Mandy Moore.
In "Love Wedding Marriage," Lutz plays a "normal guy" for once, so when we caught up with him at the film's premiere, we had to ask how it felt to tackle a real-life character versus an undead one, as well as what new side of Lutz we'll see in the rom-com.

"You see more of the normal guy side [of me] I guess," Lutz told MTV News. "My character, Charlie, struggles with being a newlywed husband and the marital bliss of all that, and hoping he'll get more and get some fun action," he explained with a grin. "And his wife [Moore] is kind of preoccupied, trying to save her parents' marriage and he gets frustrated, as most males do."
Lutz went on to say that stepping into the role of a real person, versus the pale makeup of a vampire, was a welcome change of pace. "I was playing a normal dude, which is quite nice to play," he said. "I've been trying a bunch of different roles and enjoying every experience, especially the 'Twilight' ones, but it's been great to actually be on set everyday and challenge myself and work with bigger and better actors and directors; it was a really fun, challenging experience," he said of working on the Dermot Mulroney-directed film.
"Love Wedding Marriage" opens in limited release on June 3.
